We live in the digital age. To what extent are these statements true? This paper argues that digitisation is an ancient and deeply rooted strategy that underpins the way we process, preserve and transmit information. It also argues that the distinction between the mathematical theory of information and semantic information is useful, but it must not make us lose sight of the material foundations of knowledge and its costs. From this perspective, the Istat Knowledge Report focuses on the ways and processes by which knowledge is created, transmitted and used in the economy and the society, through a selection of relevant dimensions, measured in quantitative terms with appropriate indicators. It also takes into account emerging phenomena, tools for knowledge development and policy challenges.}, issn = {2531-5994}, pages = {7--20}, doi = {10.4399/97888255208973}, url = {https://digitcult.lim.di.unimi.it/index.php/dc/article/view/95} }
