Construction and Meaning of the Relationship between Humans and machines through narratives on Artificial Intelligence

  • Ilaria Ingrao Università di Torino

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence represents nowadays an area that can generate opposite points of view in conflict with each other. On one side, there is the idea that it can be an instrument of alienation for human beings, and on the other hand, we find the idea that it turns out to be an improving technology for our abilities. In fact, several authors (including Bostrom, Tegmark, and Sadin) reflect on the future implications of the development and use of AI, pointing out the opportunities and dangers of its implementation. By moving beyond the ontological distinction between human beings and machines - which leads to creating distinction based on the organic material we are made of - in this article, we ponder some questions that emerge from the topic of Artificial Intelligence regarding our future with it. Who we are? What kind of human beings do we want to become by using AI? Through a socio-semiotic investigation between factual and fictional, it is intended to understand what it means to build Artificial Intelligence technologies that are human (and not inhuman) with which we can enter close mutual collaboration in order to create those bonds useful for our individual and collective subsistence.
