At the Origins of Computer Art

François and Véra Molnar’s Works and Studies on Algorithms

  • Fedele Di Nunno Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza"

Abstract

The studies and experiments on algorithms applied to art realised by François and Véra Molnar have not been adequately systematised and understood by critics. In particular, François' theoretical work appears marginal when it would seem, instead, to have been decisive in the creation of Véra's works of art. Indeed, François and Véra influenced each other: theory and artistic practice, algorithms and artworks in a continuous cycle of inspiration and creation. This article sets out an initial part of the research work conducted on the two artists, which will be investigated and explored in greater depth, especially the theoretical work of François Molnar, to highlight how their contribution was pioneering and decisive for the development of computer art.
