Digital Platforms: The Voracious Dictatorship That Pleases

  • Enrico Pedemonte

Abstract

The international elites are always more alert to the dangers coming from the big players of the digital economy. The antitrust authorities are starting to tackle the problem of changing traditional regulations concerned with real-world monopolies, however, this has not been met by a commensurate degree of awareness in public discourse. One explanation for this contradiction is the relationship which digital platforms created with their users, and their power to influence collective reasoning. Power to monitor influence ideas and thoughts they derive from personalised services tailored to the tastes, wishes and characteristics of each and every user. This article explores the distortions in behaviour between the new big players and citizens. It denounces the risks for democracy created  by this development of digital monopolies that are becoming ever more invasive.
